Some friends and I are creating the most amazing hoop dance event ever
on the beautiful island of Bali. We are super-stoked about blending
yoga, sound meditation, sacred geometry, and ecstatic movement with
the hoop dance flow. Jocelyn Gordon of Hoop Dance DC is one of the
featured teachers. I've created a web page that should provide you
with all the information you need. (If you need more information,
that's okay too.)
Here's the link:
Also, for you flow artists and festival goers, there are two other
events happening in Bali before and after our Sacred Circularities

Nick Woolsey is offering two poi retreats from March 1-14. Find out
Then, the 2010 Balispirit Festival happens three days after Sacred
Circularities. Find out more at www.balispiritfestival.com
I made a 3-minute film about the 2008 Balispirit Festival. You can
All three events are happening at the gorgeous retreat center Bali

That's right for just $5 YOU can get a chance at one ticket to Burning Man! Tickets to Burning Man 2008 are currently $295 on the web and there will be NO GATE SALES this year either. Yikes! So, here's your chance to get ONE TICKET for the ridiculously low price of just $5. How can we do this? We must be CRAZY to make this kind of offer! Dark Skies was gifted an extra ticket and we want to help a deserving burner and we're doing a fund raiser as well, so to tie it all in we're raffling this ticket off for $5 per entry. The drawing will be held on August 11th when we will announce the winner who will be selected by Peaches the Jack Russell Terrier rummaging in the ticket bowl.
Purely non-scientific but a lot of fun nonetheless!

TO ENTER: send $5 PER ENTRY via PayPal to darkskies@vegasartists.com
You may purchase as many entries as you wish, they are $5 each.
Each $5 entry buys you ONE CHANCE at winning this free ticket!
Good luck and have a great burn in 2008!

KMart on Fair fax and third had colemans in the gallon can for $10 (half the cost of the premium at wal mart) in the camping supplies and had some stock of lamp oil (I didn't thoroughly look, since I had purchased some at wm) in the lamp section.
Also, I spotted coleman fuel at Rite Aide for $14 a gallon in limited supply (Vermont and hollywood)

THIRD TIER: The remaining 75 tickets will be $125
Gift Tickets: we have a very limited number of gift tickets available where we trade you admission for your work on site. See below.

ATTENDANCE CAPS AND NO GATE SALES THIS YEAR
We are capping attendance at 300 and there will be NO GATE SALES this year! Advance ticket sales will cut off about a week out from the event. Under 18 with parents only, kids under 12 are free. No in-out, no pets.

Dark Skies is the southern Nevada regional burn, now to be held across the dam in Arizona! All of Burning Man’s 10 principals apply including leave no trace, no vending and the gift economy.

THEME CAMPS
We are requesting that all theme camps register and determine the minimum required amount of space that you can fit into. We are also asking most participants to drop their camping gear and park out by the front gate in order to keep the event site open and allow art cars, pedestrian traffic, and bicycles to traverse the site safely. There’s plenty of room on this site for our event, we just have to use it judiciously and creatively. Please please please register your theme camp and art so we know who’s coming!

FIRE
Dark Skies 2008 is operating in a high fire season, and in an area of pristine high desert in a beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. Dark Skies Fire Safety will be operating under the jurisdiction of Meadview Arizona Fire Dept. All final decisions regarding fire will be up to them.

•	Fire performers will be allowed i/e: poi staffs breathers and all other hand held fire performance toys.
•	Small propane flame effects; ie hand held puffers and small lpg flame effects with neither having a vertical flame length exceeding 10ft unless pre approved will be allowed.
•	Fire barrels; fire barrels will be provided and maintained by event staff and will be in community areas.
•	No personal burn barrels and fireplaces unless pre-approved in advance of the event.
•	All generators used will be required to have an abc fire extinguisher and a pointed shovel within 20 ft at all times.
•	Tentative fire times will be between 7pm and sunrise. Fire times will be subject to blackout in case of winds sustained in excess of 12 mph.
•	All fire artists and participants must check in with DSFS. DSFS has the final say when it comes to fire of any kind.
•	Smoking is to be conducted on developed and groomed areas only, no smoking is allowed in the vegetated areas of the event site. Leave no trace; never let it hit the ground.
•	Fireworks of any kind are illegal and banned 100% at this event.
•	All fire activities will be restricted to fire performance areas and then only at pre approved times. We will clearly mark these areas on site.

Important fire information; All fire activities may be banned in the case of a regional “red flag alert”. A red flag alert occurs when high winds regionally create a situation whereby all fire activities are banned. This is not the same as the high fire season ban which runs April 15 – Nov 15 and for which we are applying for variances too for this event. This is also NOT the same situation we had last time where CCFD “stuck it to us” at the last minute and bummed a lot of people out. Our hosts want to see fire at this event. But we have to play by their rules. Lets hope for low winds on the weekend of the event!

VOLUNTEER!
The heart of any regional event is the volunteers, and we love our volunteers! We have limited Volunteer opportunities available for Dark Skies.

Please check the website and the event’s news group which is located here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/

Pictures of the new site are here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/pictures/3-08sitesurveyweb/index.htm

The event’s website is understandably undergoing some changes since the move and is here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/

Thank you to the community, to our wonderful volunteers, and to all of the artists and theme camps that make this and every regional event so darn special! We cannot do any of this without YOU.

I intend these to be an ongoing series that keeps breathers up to date with trends and such in fire breathing.

I'd like to do a second video now featuring the Breather's box and the various skills needed to perform it.
What this means is that I'll need 9 box-trained breathers to commit to a single day (wednesday at the park?) where we can take about an hour out to catch this all on a camera.

I've selected March 19th as the first tentative date, 9pm at the Burn Club park. Please let me know if you can join us....

*Subject*: Town Hall Meeting: A Call to Arms for all Los Angeles Based Fire
Artists

*Where*: Smash Labs, 1714 Albion St, Los Angeles, CA 90031 323-227-6274

*When*: Doors open at 7pm Meeting begins at 8pm

*Who*: All members of the Los Angeles Based Fire Arts Community

*Why*: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State _Fire
Marshalls <http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html>_we have
learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

http://www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

This list is an opportunity for us to stay in touch as a community, and
discuss a number of pressing issues that are affecting the Los Angeles fire
community such as the upcoming implementation of safety regulations,
standards, and restrictions governing our industry.

The LA Fire mailing list will be a great place to:
discuss issues affecting the fire community
share fire related tips and techniques
communicate about fire events in the LA area
and more

Please spread the word by continuing to forward this to fire performers who
are in Los Angeles, or who visit Los Angeles and perform with fire. If we
fail in this initiative then viewpoints such as "Poi is the most dangerous
tool in your arsenal" or the potential banning of poi spinning in the
direction of the audience may become a reality.

Troupes & Tool Manufacturers that have involvement in this initiative have
included: CuriousJosh, Fire Drums, Fire Groove, Los Angeles Fire Effects (LAFX),
Machina
Candeo, Mutaytor, Phoenix Projekt, Pyrophernalia / Om Fire, Sirena
Serpentina, Trick Concepts, & Volcano Flux.

*_Directions:
_*
SmashLabs
1714 Albion Street (entrance is here - big red door with cut metal numbers -
push down on the lever to enter)
The "back" door is a big roll door in the last parking lot on the North side
of Main just before the train tracks - look for the La Mano Press sign. If
it's full, there is an empty lot directly across the street on the South
side of Main Street, or feel free to park on Main or Albion and come in the
front. *main thing to remember is if you've gone over the tracks, you've
passed Albion which is a TINY street and easy to miss.

*GoogleMaps:

*
1714 Albion St,
Los Angeles, CA 90031 - it's the triangular space that starts on Main and
back up on Albion
323-22S-MASH (323-227-6274) is the office phone which I'll have on me in
case anyone gets lost.
than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction."

Hi folks,

I'm working on two routines for LA Decom, and I need to have my music edited. Does anyone have access to audio editing equipment?

My first routine is with fire fans. However, the song is almost 4 minutes and even though I used Bio-diesel on my folding fans they went out about 15-20 seconds before my big finish. Dang it.

So I need someone who knows how to edit/splice music. There's about 10-15 seconds in the middle where it's audience applause that can be edited out and give me more fire time. Or I might edit out a little more and modify the routine, but the point is that the whole song while great, won't look great if my fans are out at the end. Anyone have music editing software? Or know where i could get some?

Also I have another routine with regular folding fans that I will be doing as a filler routine in between fire performances. However this song is almost 5 minutes and I need it edited to 2 and a half minutes max. This one is much more simple as in I just need someone to hit the pause button at the right moment, really. I just need the first 2 and a half minutes of the song and I'll be great.

Can anyone help me? I want to get this music to Quin ASAP, so please let me know if you can help or point me in the direction of someone who can.

Thanks!

DARK SKIES 2008 DATES, WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

Greetings, salutations, warm fuzzy cuddle hugs and sonic booms from Dark Skies!
We need your input on matters of scheduling next years event.

Suppose that we only had two weekends to choose from for next years Dark Skies. The third weekend in May, or the third weekend in June. Suppose also that for production costs, read: ticket prices, fire art and public safety that we were going to move the event up to Delamar Dry Lake in Lincoln County, NV which sits at 4700 feet above sea level. Nothing is written in stone yet, we are exploring all options, and asking your opinion on things before the permit apps go into either BLM field office.

Here are our thoughts on the matter of the weather and things Burning Man related...
In May, the Delamar site could be chilly and maybe even wet (from BLM), and in June it could be hot but most likely dry. To put the event in mid May puts us square in the middle of the regional event season. Going in May *could* mean that we experience some rather chilly temps, but it gets us away from Burning Man. It also however puts us where a lot of Burners, artists, and rangers may have to pick and choose what events they want to attend. We’re trying to look at all sides of this.

The biggest decider in this question may be Mother Nature herself.
Or….
What will the weather be like on Saturday at Dark Skies ’08? (the Delamar option)

Here’s some casual number crunching based on ten years of weather data for the Delamar site:

Third Saturday in May, 10 year temperatures for Alamo Nevada, subtract >< 4 degrees for Delamar lake due to 1000 foot higher altitude.
AVG LOW: 43 (sunrise)
AVG HIGH: 77 (3pm)
10 YEAR LOW LOW: 33
10 YEAR HIGH HIGH: 91
10 YEAR LOW HIGH: 66
10 YEAR HIGH LOW: 59

BOTTOM LINE for May: Cooler, one week after Toast! Almost one month before Element 11, two weeks before LIB, middle regional in the season,. If we go in May, it could be as low as 29f and our high could be as low as 62f. That particular f stands for ‘f**k me its cold’.

********************************************

Third Saturday in June data
AVG LOW: 52
AVG: HIGH: 85
1O YEAR LOW LOW: 45 (sunrise)
10 YEAR HIGH HIGH: 100 (3pm)
10 YEAR LOW HIGH: 82
10 YEAR HIGH LOW: 66

BOTTOM LINE for June: Warmer, two weeks after Element 11, two months before Burning Man, last regional of the season. If we go in June, it could be as high as 96f and as low as 49f. We’re getting closer to Burning Man, a mistake we made in Oct ’06 that we don’t intend to repeat. However, in this case we’re before the main event so it could be a great shakedown cruise for art cars, theme camps, and playa art.
Had enough yet? Then please go vote in the poll which is going up right now.

IF we had the choice of either weekend, which one would YOU choose that made the most sense for you the community and for the event itself?
3rd weekend in May, or 3rd weekend in June?

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/
left side of that page “polls”

Thanks and much much dusty love!!

Okay so, anyone who's tried to get a permit or two in LA County knows you run into one of two problems: LA City and their antiquated codes or you roll the dice on whatever the local LA County FM decides to shove on you. One guy says you can't wear paper clothing, but lets you spin with broken equipment. Another guy wants an asbestos blanket on the stage, a $1000 jobber box to hold the fuel, and limits you to tools that can be spun out without the fuel hitting the ground. *sigh*

At least in LA City, the worst thing you have to deal with is the written codes, but most of the time, dropping the NAFAA regs on them seals the deal. This is very root of the problem with fire codes: if they don't have them, you never know what kind of treatment you'll get. One day, the fire chief, or lieutenant on duty says "yeah, fine whatever you want" and the next day they threaten to put you in jail for fire eating. At least with some kind of code, the worst you have to deal with is some weird quirk in the code put in for reasons nobody knows.

For example LA City regs state that you can't spin with a fuel that has a flash point below 50 degrees, but when you ask for their preferred fuels, they tell you alcohol or white gas (both well below 50). Or how about the Seattle C7? for years they had a rider stating that a 5 gallon bucket of open water was necessary for fire safety. Well, as many of us know, water is counterproductive to putting out petrol fires:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXFvD6byF_c

So, you can see how exciting it was to me to be invited to talk with Captain Penn in the West Hollywood branch of LA County. He took a copy of our fresh, new, bullet point checklist from NAFAA <http://www.nafaa.org/checklist.htm>, a copy of the LA City codes, the NFPA 160s and the NAFAA regs 2.1. After a long talk about the city codes, and a quick review of the rest, we went down the bullet points line by line. It took hours, but in the end it looks like we have an agreeable list without silly things like a 12" flame size limitation, or the 50 degree flash point crap. He was actually particular about changing the more open-ended wording to keep untrained marshals from going too far with regulation.

The next step is the November training seminar. Well, hopefully November. They'll gather the LA county training marshals together (about 80 of them), who are in charge of disseminating new material and training local departments. We (NAFAA) will be present to give a powerpoint presentation and a live demonstration of fire performance to help lock down the deal. They'll take it to their own departments and we may have a uniform code as soon as the end of the year.

I told him no (because we really don't) and he informed me about other fire groups gathering in CC park, telling the rangers that they were with Burn Club.

Let me say that if you are not on the basketball court, on wednesday, between the hours of 8pm and midnight, WHEN a permit holder is present... you are breaking the law. The park ranger informed me that the kit gloves on collateral spinning in that park are coming off. Non-permitted fire in CCpark will be treated as public endangerment and the perpetrators will be arrested.

The odd part about this is that it's illegal to spin without a permit in any park in culver city, but it's LEGAL to spin in your back yard in LA. Why would people go out of their way to break the law?

Here are the details (this and more info posted on www.firegroove.com):
--------------------------
Specialty Workshop #1 ~
Poi Technique I
Instructor: Zan & Noah of Instruments of the Now
Level: Beginning - Intermediate
Saturday, February 10th
4:30 - 6:00 pm

This is the tech class you've been waiting for. All the moves you've wanted to learn,
from someone who really knows how to teach. All levels are welcome; the class
content is dependent on participant ability, and will be tailored to best suit the group. We'll learn kicks, shots, and direction changes as stylish transitions between
patterns. We'll work on starting to use the spaces behind-the-back and under-the-
legs with simple patterns and drills. Finally, Flowers and Planar Rotation will be introduced with easy to grasp examples. Focus will be put on getting 1-on-1
coaching for each person to correct the subtleties of technique.
Specialty Workshop #2 ~
Poi Technique II

Feeling like you need some new ideas in your poi swinging? This workshop is for
you. If you're already comfortable with a variety of patterns, this will take your
spinning to a new level. We'll work on some new concepts like shots, meltdowns
(the most versatile group in the waistwrap family), and going beyond the behind-
the-back weave. Time permitting, the class will move into tangles, wraps, anti-spin, more advanced flowers, and dodging daggers based on group preference. You
DON'T have to be an expert already to learn these moves. Focus will be put on
getting 1-on-1 coaching for each person to correct the subtleties of technique. You
won't be disappointed by this workshop and the new doors it opens for you.
-------------------

Specialty Workshop #3 ~
Intro to Contact Juggling
Instructor: Greg Maldonado
Level: Beginning
Saturday, February 10th
1:30 - 3:00 pm

Take advantage of an opportunity to learn the magical art of contact juggling from America's most famous instructor. Greg Maldonado, producer of the award winning series "Contact Juggling", will walk you through the first few steps of this exciting
new form of object manipulation, teaching you how to make a ball float and roll
across your body. Students will leave with a solid understanding of how to learn juggling, a superior familiarity with the contact ball, and a body of new techniques
and tricks for further learning. Students are encouraged to bring a ball if they have
one, but 100mm (4in) contact balls will be available at the workshop in a variety of colors for $15.

Instructor: Noel Yee
Level: Beginning & Intermediate

Greetings from The Singularity Core…

We are very excited to announce that tickets to Dark Skies – The Singularity Event, have now gone on sale, and our web site is live and ready for action. Which means theme camps and artists can now register online.

D.S./Singularity is YOUR South West regional event! And, it represents a major step forward in the regional network as a whole.

Dark Skies – ‘The Singularity Event’ will be held May 17-20, 2007 on Roach Lake. As always, this is a leave no trace event, there are no in-out privileges and there is no vending of any kind, except for ice sales. There are no pets allowed, and kids under 18 must be with parents or responsible adults. This is our 5th event on the beautiful Roach Lake playa south of Las Vegas and the second joint regional event held on the site.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT THIS TIME?
We’re glad you asked!
For starters, we are allowing kids 12 and under in for free this time! (With parents of course) We hope this encourages more families to attend this event and it is something that many of you have asked for, so there you go. Come on out and play with us mom & dad!

Second, the ticket price structure is as follows:
We are doing an ‘early bird special’ from NOW until Jan 16 for $40. It is hoped that these discounted tickets will encourage those of you with limited incomes to attend DS-Singularity and this is something that you asked for too. Those of you who can afford the higher tier tickets please buy those okay?

There are 100 of these discounted tickets available, so when they’re gone they are gone.

NOW until Jan 16 or until the first 100 are gone: $40
Jan 17 – April 1: $50
April 2nd – May 16: $75
At the gate: $100

Though the event permit ends on Sunday, we encourage you to camp with us on Sunday night. Stay and help clean up on your public land and, the decompression starts promptly at sundown. (It’s Vegas baby, we move fast around here!)

WE NEED YOUR HELP.
The heart of any event of this type is our wonderful volunteers. We need gate captains, earth guardians, and perimeter and security staff. We are also looking for someone with a box blade grader to help improve the road’s into the site. We need volunteers of all types and skills! Merely purchasing a ticket to this event does not constitute participation. Participation means getting involved. The way to get involved is to volunteer and help the event run smoothly. PLEASE GET INVOLVED, WE NEED YOU ALL. This is YOUR event, this is not a spectator event and it only works if we all help.

LATEST NEWS:
BLM has approved Dark Skies – The Singularity Event! We are a firm go and the site is locked for that weekend in May. We will be working with a ‘Hard Closure’ of the site again and we are currently talking to BLM about the exact dimensions and boundaries of that closure. We are much further ahead in the planning process than in any of the previous 4 events held on the site. This does not mean we are out of the woods, it means we’re simply getting better at this as we move along. And that is in no small part due to YOUR SUPPORT. When we say ‘This is your Regional Event’ that is not some catch phrase, we really mean it. We could not be doing this without your help. Thank you all!

Please visit the Dark Skies – The Singularity Event website here http://darkskies.vegasartists.com where you can find art and theme camp registration, tickets, volunteer opportunities, and other vital information. Many thanks and major props go out to ‘School Girl’ Randy Winsett for his hard work in making this site rock!

See you guys in May and thank you all so, so much!
BOOM
The DS/Sing ‘Core’.

I'M RIDING TO END AIDS!

Hello.

On June 3rd 2007, I'm bicycling in the AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise funds for those who are trying to put an end to the ADIS epidemic.

I’m required to raise $2,500.00 and have signed an agreement with the origination committing to that amount. I’ve decided that I will make more and set my goal at $50,000.00.
Most of us know, or have known someone whose life has been affected by HIV. I have personally lost two of my childhood friends to AIDS and I have another friend who’s lived with the virus for the past 20 years. If you don’t know anyone who has the virus, you can surely see how it’s affected your life any time you’ve made love to a new partner. It’s a conversation we all have prior to sharing ourselves. The implication of the effect of AIDS lives in our choice to use condoms and other means of protection each time we engage in sexual relations.
This is not a gay disease; it is a human disease that affects us all. Here is your chance to do something about it. Help end this crisis.
Please help me support the HIV/AIDS services by giving what you can.
For those of you who which to donate; Donations can be made by clicking the (support Jim: Make a Donation) button located on my photo at http://www.aidslifecycle.org/1718

Thank you all for reading this and offering your support.
Let’s us all keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past.

Tiny Ho out!
As of 8:30 am on Thursday, Clark County Fire Department has approved fire performers at Dark Skies. This means fire spinners, breathers, and others are allowed to perform at this event. WHAT IS NOT PERMTED: Compressed gasses, that means NO PROPANE. Sorry. We had hoped to get that but it just didn’t happen. We are also getting approved for aerial fireworks during our icon burn on Saturday night. Do not bring any of this stuff, only our pre approved shot schedule is going to go up on Saturday night. (and it’s gonna be awesome!) We greatly appreciate the communities support and understanding. This has been a major challenge but hopefully we are on the right track to becoming one of the west coasts premiere legal fire events. Hope to see you all on Roach Lake this weekend.

The troop I normally work with is booked, so I am seeking a few female fire dancers that I could contact for a paid gig on October 7th. We're talking around a 15 minute performance, to either all live drum, or a mix of drum and music you like to spin to :) Please contact me asap at aleccm@earthlink.net or 949/370-0523. Please let me know what toys you work with, i.e. poi, staff, fingers, etc.

While we were in Eugene we had a fire jam at our house just about every wednesday for about 6 months, then moving out of that place kinda killed that very fun get together. The best thing about having those jams was that even though we hardly knew any of each other at first, it very quickly turned into a family event and it was never burdened by competition. We helped and taught each other, and nobody ever saw it as being competitive. :)

I would say I'm intermediate as far as ability goes, and would love to expand my repertoire. He doesn't spin(though wants to learn eventually), but he's very happy being my safety. We'd love to meet some new friends down here, and I seriously want to get back in the habit of fire dancing on a regular basis.

Anyone around that wants to get together, or could refer me to parties like this that already happen? I'd also love to learn staff, fans, fingers, etc. Pretty much whatever I can get my hands on! :)

An Interactive art piece symbolizing the connection of all things and how what you choose affects everything. It is designed to generate life-changing breakthroughs!
Allow yourself while in the Web to work through your fear and be inspired to make new empowering choices that create more hope for your future! Those who choose to be wrapped and suspended in the Web may discover that resistance creates the persistence of fear but acceptance allows for the disappearance of fear. Shed your fixed beliefs and ways of being while inside the Web and step into a new world of increased hope and possibility!
The web will offer up personal truths, it will offer up hope and dreams, it will offer a true reflection of how what you choose (hope or fear) affects the outcome of your future in a clear representation in the present moment.
“The Web of Dreams” will be placed 1300ft from the man at 1:30. We will have 2 scheduled events on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 pm to midnight. The first, spider races, two people are attached at the torso creating one eight legged spider. They then have to work together to make it to the other side of the Web. The second event is Bumper bubbles. One of ten fans will fill your personal bubble with air and after it is sealed you will then bounce, bump and run into the other participates in their personal bubbles.
We got a late start on this idea but we know, with some help from the community, we can still pull it off (no fear only hope). We have most everything we need but if the opportunity to assist others in breaking through their fear and gaining more hope and possibility inspires you we invite you to become a part of the “Web Team” and help in anyway you can. Talk to any newcomer to one of our events and they will tell you how much they change their perceptions of reality. I strongly believe that the lifestyles of this family have something to teach the rest of humanity...how inspired humanity will become if we transmit the massive surges of positive energy we all generate as one big tribal unit, unified in our pursuit of a higher form of reality.

HELP!!!!!

A friend of mine was supposed to put together a small (8-10 person) Fire Troupe for a party Friday night (June 9). I've emailed him for confirmation and haven't received any response, so at this point I'm assuming he's dropped the ball. So here's the info:

Who: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (www.lasisters.org)
What: The Nun Party (official kick-off party for LA Gay Pride)
Where: West Hollywood Park - off Robertson behind where Cobalt Cantina used to be
When: Friday June 9 - the party begins at 8, but performers and drummers are not needed until 10:15.

The Sisters are hosting an International gathering of Drag Nuns (Called "Conclave 666") this week and are hosting the official kick-off party for LA Gay Pride. The party benefits 3 different gay youth organizations: The Trevor Project (gay teen hotline), C.I.T.Y X1 (for youth by youth), and the LA Gay & Lesbian Center's Youth Project. More information about the Sisters, The Nun Party, and the beneficiaries are on their website. The Sisters are unable to pay anything for your time and talent, so that they can give as much money as possible to the charities. In lieu of monetary payment, they may be able to arrange either free or reduced-price drinks during the party.

They would like a short impromptu 15-20 minute fire show accompianied by live drummers. About 5 performers and 5 drummers should do it. They are looking for both male and female performers - while this is a party targeted to mostly gay and lesbian folks, your sexual orientation is NOT an issue! Just have FUN!

I apologize for putting this out so late, but as I said before the guy who was supposed to organize this has apparently dropped the ball and the Sisters are in dire need.

If you and/or someone you know is interested in helping the Sisters out (and having a fantastic time at this party) PLEASE contact Sister Dixie Wrecked at LASisterDixie@aol.com as soon as possible so she can give you all the details and make sure you are on the guest list.

Thanks!

THE SINGULARITY ARTS FESTIVAL
MAY 11-14TH,Thursday thru Sunday, 2006

Salutations from the SINGULARITY ARTS FESTIVAL Event Team!

Here is the second official announcement!
Included are some details you need to know in order to participate to your fullest potential!

In this blast, we'll go over the who, what, where, why and how.

Who?
Las Vegas and Los Angeles Regional Burning Man communities are coming together to create a larger event that together we can take higher and build stronger. We are very excited about this opportunity and venture.

What?
The concept is simple. We will provide a well-supported empty space for you to come, express, experience and create. This event exists SOLEY ON YOUR PARTICIPATION. That means - WE ALL NEED EACH OTHER, AS WELL AS ALL OF OUR ART!

Where?
Roach Lake, Nevada.
(Southwest of Las Vegas, about a three hour drive from L.A., just across the California/Nevada state line )
Buy your tickets now! http://singularity.inticketing.com

Why?
It is time for local Burning Man regions to reach out to one
another. It is time to work together beyond our disparate regions and unite, expand, and gain strength. We want to stretch beyond our borders and integrate ourselves in the name of Art, Creation, and Community. This event is NOT about Las Vegas or Los Angeles. It is about community. It is about YOU! We look forward to seeing people from all regions taking part in Singularity. Tickets have already been purchased by participants in 8 states!

We are reaching out, and inviting diverse communities, not only burning communities, to join us. Expect large-scale pyro
installations. In addition to the many styles of music that can be found at Burning Man, the Las Vegas Jam Band Society will create a theme camp to host live bands. Each community will add to the overall experience of this event. The significance lies NOT in the similarities, but rather in the diversities.

How?
It starts by purchasing a presale ticket now. There are only a finite number of tickets available. This event will be limited to 1,000 attendees, maximum. This is part of our permit, and is a fixed number in accordance with an agreement with the BLM. When the tickets are gone, the event will be sold out. All participants, planners, & performers are buying a ticket. Every single one of us is paying, every single one of us is participating.

Here are 7 critical areas you can participate in at Singularity:

1- A CALL FOR ART
2- REGISTER YOUR THEME CAMP
3- A CALL FOR MUSICIANS AND PERFORMERS
4- VOLUNTEERS
5- FIRE SPINNING AND LARGE SCALE PYRO
6- LEAVE NO TRACE
7- TICKETING

1- A CALL FOR ART:
CONTACT: art@thesingularityevent.com
Do you remember the first time you saw a work of art that moved you in a powerful way? When you stood there in awe, and experienced it, remember how you felt your emotions wash over you? It felt good to be alive. Well, YOU are that artist now! So do the work, and BRING YOUR ART OUT TO THIS EVENT! People are coming from all over the country
to be touched and moved by your creation. Sculptures, paintings, and fourth dimensional constructs, anything that is your art. It is worthy. It is special. It is worth bringing out. You never know who your art will touch and inspire.

2- REGISTER YOUR THEME CAMP:
CONTACT: http://thesingularityevent.com/themecamps
THIS EVENT IS ALL ABOUT THE THEME CAMP.
The main organizational structure at Singularity is the Theme Camp Experience the joy of a large community made up of smaller communities. Wake up to the laughter of your friends. Get more quality time in with 20 of your friends this weekend than you will in 6 months of city living. REGISTER YOUR THEME CAMP NOW!

-ONLY REGISTERED THEME CAMPS CAN BRING AMPLIFIED MUSIC.
-REGISTERED THEME CAMPS GET PREMIUM PLACEMENT IN THE CITY.
-REGISTERED SITES WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE.
-REGISTERED THEME CAMPS ALLOW US TO "CLUSTER" GROUPS THAT SUPPORT EACH OTHER, AND ADD TO THE ENJOYMENT OF YOUR THEME CAMP.
-ALL NON-REGISTERED THEME CAMPS WILL BE PLACED WITHIN 10 FEET OF PORTA POTTIES AS A LESSON FOR YOU TO REGISTER NEXT TIME!
-(Just kidding on the last one, but come on! register!)

3. A CALL FOR MUSICIANS AND PERFORMERS:
CONTACT: performance@thesingularityevent.com
Are you a fire spinner, hooper, performance troupe, drummer, band, dj, hawaiian nose hummer, Gregorian chanter? Do you play the Butt Flute? YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO SHARE YOUR MUSIC WITH EACH OTHER.

There are several ways to perform at the event. The first way is to host your own theme camp. Or, you can contact us, and we'll connect you with theme camps that are hosting performance areas, where you can perform as their guest. There will be a small performance area at center camp for eclectic performers, spoken word, and fire troupes
that perform to a CD.

Theme camps with music should have works of art, decoration, and places to hang out. Do not just bring a stack of speakers and call yourself a theme camp. If you are doing a performance area, we want you to bring lights, decoration, and seating. Create your area.

* A few rules on sound: theme camps with music will be asked to give 3 one hour time slots each day to guest performers. This should increase the number of people dancing in your area. Plus, it's fun to meet new people (and maybe meet your next and finest new Lover!),
and creates a generous environment for performers traveling from far away.
* A note on volume. If it’s after 3 am at night, go to half volume.
* Be respectful of your neighbors.

4. VOLUNTEERS:
CONTACT: http://www.thesingularityevent.com or email directly the department you want to help.
Information available on the website.
There's a lot of juice in volunteering. Each area needs helpers. Contact us now so we can get you in the loop.

5-FIRE SPINNING AND LARGE SCALE PYRO:
CONTACT: fire@thesingularityevent.com
We are encouraging all large-scale fire sculptures and fire
performers to attend. Please contact us so we can explain how fire safety, equipment checks, and registration will work. You must contact us before the event if you want to bring fire gear of any kind.

6-LEAVE NO TRACE:
CONTACT: your own trash bag !!
Only with your help and dedication can we use this land again. By policing your own trash, and that of your camp mates, we will all be able to enjoy this event next year. This IS a LEAVE NO TRACE event!

Here is some info from the Burning Man website regarding Leave No Trace principles:
http://tinyurl.com/qyvac

And more Leave No Trace from the BLM website:
http://www.blm.gov/education/lnt/

7-TICKETING:
CONTACT: http://singularity.inticketing.com
We are allowed a maximum of 1,000 tickets:
* The first 300 tickets will be sold for $50 or until April 1st
(whichever comes first).
* The second 300 tickets will be sold for $75 or until May 1st.
* The final 400 tickets will be sold for $100.
* Tickets at the gate will be $125 if there are any left.

As is customary, a 10-15% portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF): www.blackrockarts.org
now anna's turn>>>

Whaaaaahhh...?! Hey, friends and family! In addition to our CNY2006 event later that evening, Phoenix Projekt has been asked by the Chinese Historical Society to march with them at the head of the Golden Dragon Parade in Chinatown on Saturday the 4th. This is a HUGE honor for us, and we'd be delighted to share it with YOU!

Chinatown on Chinese New Year's Day is not something to be missed. Each year, I and my friends bundle up and scoot on down there to take in the sights, smells, sounds, and overall jostling of the day. The music and kung fu demonstrations, dance teams, firecrackers...it all blends into a really fun cacaphony. But the parade is the highlight of the day. If you arrive early enough, you can stake out a good vantage point to watch it go by. The mayor and City Council show up in their limos, the winner of the Miss Chinatown contest sits atop her humungous float, and the crowds toss party snaps at the feet of the ROTC kids who are unlucky enough to be picked as crowd control.

There are numerous kung fu schools who march in this, and they do their weapons and empty-hand sets, as well as....(drum roll please)...lots and LOTS of lion and dragon dance. Watching the teams wind their way down Broadway is overkill in color and sound - it's magnificent! If only for that, it's worth it to come.

We'll be bringing our own lion team, our weapons sets, stilters, and much more! Please come and enjoy this day with us - there's no one we'd rather share it with than you!

Gung Hee Fat Choy!
Saturday, February 4, 2006 - Sunday, February 5, 2006
8:00 PM

Happy New Year, friends and family! Ni hao!

No, not *that* new year...I'm talking about Chinese New Year!

2006 (4703 by the Confucian calendar) is the Year of the Red Dog, and Phoenix Projekt is inviting you to a spectacular night's event complete with dazzling fire performance, kickass martial arts displays, inspiring aerial magic, traditional Chinese Lion and Dragon dance, a midnight parade, Taoist altar and blessings for the new year, all-night tea ceremony, and the sounds of some of our community's MOST ROCKIN' DJ's. We will also host an 8:00 $10 all-you-can-eat Soul & Chinese food buffet catered by chefs Fong and Yealang, so bring your appetite and a pair of chopsticks and dig in, honey!

Chinese New Year festival is about gathering friends and family together to celebrate new beginnings and welcome in luck and fortune...in this case, with LOTS of good music, kickass fire and martial arts performance, and dancing. This year, the Year of the Red Dog, marks a transition year in the Confucian cycle and the circle of the Five Elements (Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire.) This year is the turning point between the last twelve-year cycle of Metal and the next twelve-year cycle of Water...but there's a catch: 2006 is a Year of Fire (melting the Metal to transform it to Water) and we intend to honor that with a dizzying spectacle of martial arts and fire performance. Come dressed in your Mandarin best for a discounted admission price, and we'll see you in 4703!

Gong Hee Fei Choi, everybody! Happy New Year!

Hey ya'll, we've got a fun little semi-spontaneous event for ya.

Some of you may have heard me babble on about collective unconsciousness, the philosophy of easy, and our ability to self program ourselves to be instantaneously great at whatever has your passion.

For me, I've been studing all these thing through kinetics, IE firespinning and martial dance. We now feel we have enough first hand experience with these thngs to validate our theories. (We being other like-minded spinners, I'm not quite yet at the point of referring to myself in the royal we. :) )

For a while now I've felt like we have the ability to "download" skills. As in that "Whoa, I know Kung-fu" monment from the matrix. As in you can just be good with a staff as fast as you're willing to let yourself. I now have the confirmation (and therefore confidence) I needed to take this out to a larger audience.

The confirmation came in the form of this kid named Dave. We met out at the burn and we traded moves. He was just starting out with the contact staff style. He took the few pointers I could offer and went back to colorado and just flew with it. In that short time he has become one of the most jaw-dropping spinners I've ever seen. He contacted me recently and we started talking about some of the more esoteric points of this newer way of training. Being the neo-hippies we are, we made an agreement to let each other tap into the other's flow. And it totally worked, I found myself discovering all these new skills had never even thought of, and he as well. All this happened across state lines ya'll. So we started really getting excited about it and he's out here now to really study this. And he brought a friend. Julian is 16 and has only been studying for two months. He will blow your mind regardless, and when you factor in the incredibly brief time frame he has been studying, fuhgeddaboudit.

And then at greensector this weekend, we tapped into that flow hugely. And people came over to play with us. People were instantly picking up moves that took me months to dial down. And our own boy Charlie was the next big thing. He literally just jumped into our circle and was flowing moves like he was born there. Sure he has a martial arts background, and was lucky enough to be born asian, but the things he was doing in his first hour put him in the top 10 percent of the staffers I know. HIS FIRST HOUR, PEOPLE! This happened once, that means it can happen to you.

So here's what's up. Dave and Julian and a bunch of other spinners and you are going out into the desert to really explore this. You are invited. We feel that the flow will be so strong that just being there will be beneficial for everyone involved.

Me personally, while I am hugely excited about learning new moves, and increasing control and finding balance within and without, I am choosing to focus on learning how to learn, and most of all how to teach most efficiently, and easily.

It seems that part of the next step on my trampoline floored life involves sharing this art with as many people as possible. Because while spinning is an amazing workout, an incredible meditation, and yes, a great way to get laid, we feel that what it best served for is as an indicator of just how powerful the mental aspect of it is. Because the programming is incredibly simple. And it can be applied towards anything in your life. Getting over that powerful relationship, getting ahead in your career, feeling self confident, all of these things are right at your fingertips. But because they are not physically tangible, you may not believe they're working. And belief is the engine that drives this train. So when you find yourself pulling off some sweet move you can't believe you can do with ease, that's hard to argue with. And that taps you into the second most powerful force in existence. Belief. It's really all you need to accomplish anything.

We believe that we can help you open doors within yourself. And that as you open your channels, it helps us open ours further. So we ask that if you choose to join us, please be as open minded as possible, and forget to bring any ego.

I'm here to learn how to teach. So if you've never spun before, that's majestic. It'll be fun wacthing you blow your own mind, over and over. If you've been spinning those same six moves for the last six years, we want you too. If you don't want to spin but are just curious about the process, bring that. If you're a drummer, or other musician, or can bake really awesome cookies, bring what you can. Everyone who can be in positive frame of mind for that time is welcome. If you have something that helps you open your mind, bring that.

Now for some particulars. OF course there's a conversation about money. But it's an easy one, of course. I am currently processing value and self worth issues. I want to share this freely, but it does seem to be part of my money generating mechanism. So for this first outing, donations will be glady accepted. What makes the most sense to me right now is a dollar a percentage point of improvement. If you feel like you got ten percent better, feel free to flow ten bucks. 15, 15. I'll stop underestimating your math skills now. And I ask this. Bring out a hundred bucks if you have it. I'm not expecting that from you, I just want you to be open to the possibilty you can absloutley achieve that this weekend.

I'm less concerned with money on this one. I genuinely want to share this with you, so if you're strapped, no worries, I'll catch it karmically somewhere else. Tradeouts are also an option.

Details.

We'll be up in hungry valley. You get there by jumping on the five north, pass valencia, past castaic. When you see pyramid lake, you're getting close. Just past Vista del lago, (which in english translates to "Vista of the Lago") you'll see a sign for Smokey Bear road. Take that.

Turn left at the stop sign. At the next stop sign, you'll see a row of hay bales. Yell "Hay" and point. Your friends will say "What?!" and you'll go "Hay, right there. Whole bunch of hay." They'll punch you in the arm and you'll take the gravel road right on the other side of them. Look down the road, check that it's clear then slide a few fishtails around the corners. Make sure you both yell "yeehaw" and make the General lee's horn sound. Do not crash.

(both of those bits will come up in the teaching, believe it or not)

Follow this road for a bit. You'll pass a ranger gate house, ( you may have to pony up a few bucks if you come in on a weekend day. Kep following same road. You'll pass a few campgrounds, eventually come to a stop sign. Go though this sign staying straight. (no jokes) follow this road a bit more, drive over the cement bridge over the wash, and at some point you'll see a left. Most likely there will be signage of some sort. A pie plate with three concentric circles most likely or something gold and blingy. Follow this road all the way back to where all the us is. You are home.

We're intending on being up there from late thursday thru late sunday most likely. Come and go as you please.

What to bring.

Firewood.

Firewood. It can be purchased at grocery stores, or you can go to a hardware store and ask for their mill scraps. It is brass balls cold at night, we will want a roaring fire.

Firewood.

Warm clothes, and less warm clothes. Layers. Another thing we highly recommend is wearing workout clothes that help you feel powerful or sexy or just good. It helps.

Tents and sleeping bags and more food and water than you think you need. It's possible you'll come out for an afternoon and end up pulling a two dayer.

Music. I'll have a boombox and my ipod. (As fair warning, I would imagine we'll have a little rifaroke while we're there.)

No fuel. We're in a tinderbox and I just don't want to deal with it. The fire is superflous for this time anyway.

Your spinning tools. If you don't have any and want to learn, go to home depot and get a one inch wooden dowel. Have them cut it somewhere between your chin and nose, whatever feels right.

Lots of water.

Glowy blinkies you damn ravers. Why not? It'll give the aliens a target.

There are nice potties with doors out there. I imagine TP will go fast, so bring it.

Video cameras.

Whatever will add to the fun. Surprise us.

See ya on the playground.

Rif.

Hello, my extended family here in the city of Angels and elsewhere. This post could occurr as self-serving, so if you're not down with OPT, (Other peoples therapy) please be warned.

Boy, there's nothing like the holidays to really make you think about what family is. I had the opportunity to spend a month of 14 hour days working with my parents out at our family Christmas tree lot. No days off. Close quarters. That will teach you a few things about yourself. And where you come from. And it will also make you take take stock of where you're at.

And I got to be honest with myself . I have not been living the life that I feel I deserve to. This is due entirely to my own self imposed limitations and self worth issues. After many nights of deep soul searching, I am able to join the ranks of those who are badass enough to be able to acknowledge their own dysfunctions. I won't go into the 11 different after-school specials my life is airing right now, as they are not what's important in this writing.

What is important to me in this moment is the knowledge that while I am newly uncertain about my biological family, I can take comfort that I will always have one here in the LA burner community. Knowing that I am surrounded by people as committed to living outside the societal mores of workaholism and full time suffering gives me hope and courage in these trying days. And the fact that you are all so fabulous in all your unique ways is just gravy.

If this sounds like a cry for help, that's because it's exactly what it is. I see where all this turmoil is ultimately the best thing that could have happened to me, because I really needed my shit shook up. But now that everything in my life, and i do mean EVERYthing is getting jostled, it's a bit confronting. I feel refreshingly upbeat most of the time, but there are still too many lows for my tastes. So what I'm asking for Christmas is some really varsity hugs. So if you're going to be at Cirko-6 and you see me, please come over and give me a squeeze. I think that's what I'd like most this year. Either that or hope. Both would be nice. I'm really feeling the color gold for some reason, so I'll be wearing some Gold Chinese PJ's. That might make me easy to find.

One of the things that gives me hope is that I think I have found the thing that will help me rise up out of my ashes like a, hey what's that firebird called again? Oh yeah, a Phoenix. Funny to think that I could forget about the most beautiful bird in the world to me.

Anyway, to get back on track, I have been delving deeply into neuro-linguistic programming. Which is a fancy name for talking to yourself. I believe that our minds are easily programmed, and the mechanism for doing so is simply stating what you want to occur. I believe all we have to do to create the ways of being we would prefer, is to tell ourselves that we already are. IE I am brave, I am focused, etc etc. I now have empirical reason to believe that it works very well, not only for kinetic activities like spinning, but other activities, like living well, and not pushing away those who just want to love you.

So I am going to give myself a litmus test. I have been dabbling with something called a three sectional staff. For those not raised on Kung-fu films, it is basically a staff separated into three pieces, connected by chains into equal thirds. It is considered to be a very challenging tool, as it is unpredictable and therefore dangerous. Funny, I just realized that the things I find most beautiful usually are a bit of both. Lions, Birds of prey, Horses, Firespinners....

I guess the reason for this post, other than the obvious, is that I think I may be able to give something back this year. I might be able to be what so many of you have been for me, inspiring. So I'd like to share with you what my plan is for this new years eve.

I am fortunate enough to be able to be performing with my DC Juicy Family at Cirko-6. We have a song called "What you blinging to tha' party?" It's obviously about what you bring to wherever you are, is it bling or blah? During this song, my intent is to show you exactly what I feel this new science is capable of. Because I now believe in the power of belief. I'm now starting to be able to really truly believe in myself. And I believe it's time I took a stand.

So I'm going to rock the three sectional staff for a minute during that song. And to really drive the point home, I'm going to attempt to rock two at a time. I've got one day to learn them, today, friday the 30th. It's 6:18pm. I believe I have enough time to figure out enough quality stuff to fill a minute. I believe that by just trusting in myself, and my theory, I can pull it off.

What would make me happiest in this moment is to be able to give somebody else who may be going through these holiday blues a little bit of gold to go along with them. A lot of us seem to be weathering some pretty turbulent stuff these days. I think we may have found a way to make it all a little easier. It most likely just takes a little practice and lot of belief.

So I'm going to go get started on both.

See you at the first 2:30 AM of this beautifully new year.

All love,

RFA.

“A View From Inside A Scene: How Bottoms Deal With Pain”

Pain can be a pleasure and a gift. It can be used to torture, it can be a tool to heal, and it can be used to bring forth information that wouldn’t be given freely. What does pain mean to you? How do you prepare for pain before a scene? How do you prefer it be used it in a scene? How do you process it in the body and mind, and be prepared for more? What does pain do to your body after a scene? How do you deal with/care for bruising? How do you prepare for the next onslaught?

In a panel of both males and females who are subs, slaves, masochists and switches, we will talk about the physical as well as the psychological aspects of how we deal with pain that is delivered in a scene. We will talk about the pitfalls as well as the elation; the mental preparation and physical aftercare.
